A landscape is defined geographically as the visible features of an area of land, its landforms, and how they integrate with natural or human-made features, often considered in terms of their aesthetic appeal. A landscape includes the physical elements such as mountains, hills, rivers, lakes, ponds and the sea, indigenous vegetation and human elements including different forms of land use, buildings, and structures, and transitory elements such as lighting and weather conditions. From geographical point of view landscape generally refers to both natural environments and man-made environments.

Huc describes in her book ‘ India a sacred geography ‘ each and every landscapes including rivers, mountains and forests of this land are elaborately linked to the stories of gods & heroes of myths & epics. Many of India’s thirthas [holy waters] are on the banks and at confluence of its great rivers. Landscape is connected ,linked with lore and it evokes emotion and attachment.
Indian landscapes are also built up with strata of myth, memory and association that shape the human perception of nature. As Simon Schama quotes in his study of landscapes & myths ” before it can ever be a repose for the senses, landscape is the work of the mind. Its scenery is built up as much from the strata of memory as from layers of rock”.
